(CNN) system.UInt64 Carolina Panthers of selected Auburn University quarterback cam Newton as the first pick 2011 NFL draft on Thursday.

The Panthers received is first pick as a result of the worst franchise last season and had been widely tipped to the 21-year-old opt for.

Denver Broncos draft allocated seconds and the two-time Super Bowl winner chose Texas A & M linebacker von Miller.

The draft was in the midst of a dispute between NFL teams and players about pay rates.

Wide receiver a.j. Green was selected fourth and plays for the Cincinnati Bengals, with Patrick Peterson, a corner back at Louisiana State University, selected by the Arizona Cardinals.
